With my Concept set in place my next step was to analysis the site to find what sort of structure would work best in terms of its surrounding context and making use of the sites natural advantages.
Below you will find an array of analysis studies I believe are important to the site in terms of shaping an identity for South Brisbane and creating an usable structure.
Site Location:
This diagram simply locates the site within South Brisbane. As you can see it is located on the body of vacant land next to Queensland Rails South Brisbane Station. It is currently used as staff parking lot and disabled access.
This diagram explains how the site sits exactly on top of a cross road of two main roads. one leads into South Bank the other into Brisbane. Because of this, the site becomes a very busy but forgotten about area. It is simply a space which is used as subconscious transition zones.
The blue arrows indicate pedestrian flow. Because of the high vehicular traffic flow it makes it very difficult for pedestrians to cross the intersection.
Land Marks:
After explaining this zone as a "subconscious transition zone" it is interesting to note that it is surrounded by extremely popular landmarks. I feel this leaves the site with great potential and also a great hindrance. The landmarks assist in creating a barren site and pull people away from the area.
Outgoing Traffic:
This diagram is meant simply to aid in explaining how people are pulled away from the site and create that subconscious transition zone.
Plan Progression:
This diagram shows a pattern in progression and how I am going to continue or accentuate it and use it to my advantage. Through South Bank a public precinct has been produced along the river edge. As we make our way further north we find South Bank Corp has also stepped up and created a Street Precinct along Grey street. I feel I can accentuate this lattice development idea bringing a broader range of public to these precinct as it reachers further north and west of Brisbane.
Some will notice the arrow extends over the railway, I feel that there is very unique opportunity to create a sub railway precinct under or above the rail way.
Art:
I explained earlier that there are spots of graffiti street art scattered around South Brisbane I wont to use this semi established scene and strengthen it as a concept for the site.
For the structure itself i wont to incorporate some sort of visual interactive graffiti art medium. developing a phenomenology basis for my design.
Sun Study:
This diagram touches more on the structure I wont to implement on the site. When I was on site I noticed that the afternoon sun will cast a large shadow on the site, this could potential be something I need to keep in mind when designing my building.
Also when on site I noticed people catching the train were so uncomfortable by the glare and heat of the sun directly shinning at them in the afternoon that people were choosing to wait down stairs for there train or even in the stair well. This may also hold a considerable impact on my design.
Macro-Analysis:
The Macro-Analysis clearly shows the suburb boundaries taken form the Brisbane City Counicl web page (These are highlighted in red). The other gradients of colour are what i felt to be the emotional edges of the overall site. When i felt like i was entering a different zone would be in a new precinct or development - for lack of a better word. As you head further north into South Brisbane i feel the zone becomes very baron, dry and lacks an identity. With my Master plan I wont to do a couple of things. Create a stronger identity for the site and surrounding areas. increase the natural precinct that South Bank displays.
