Week 10 Question

Question:

Why is it important to reflect on your design process and what can you learn from this?

Answer:

I agree that it is very important to reflect on your design process and i also feel that is what i lacked in my first presentation (Assignment 2). When we have an idea for the first time, from my understanding it is very raw and underdeveloped. But the excitement of an idea sometime catches us off guard and we go through the design process slotting in these ideas with out understanding them in context.

Reflecting on your own design gives one the time to see if there big ideas fit into the same design layout as there concept. Only through reflection on the context in relation to design development and ideas can we see if something is actually going to work on site.

Example:

Here is what i believe to be an example of great design ideas without the reflection of its workings in context.

Philippe Stark's Juicer

The image above is Philippe Stark's design of a juicer. While the idea is great and aesthetically it is stimulating and interesting. Functionally it just does not work as a juicer. Thus the reflection on design was not there. Or perhaps the design intent was for this juicer to be more of a sculptural element and in that case the design was successful.
